Internships
B.W. Furlong & Associates is a busy, progressive practice located in northwestern New Jersey. The area is home to a dense equine population, including many horses excelling at international levels of competition. The practice provides ambulatory services as well as out-patient and in-patient evaluation/treatment, on both a routine and referral basis.
The internship is designed to provide 2 highly motivated individuals with in-depth, one-on-one training in lameness, internal medicine and reproduction, while offering additional experience in ambulatory medicine, sport horse medicine and pleasure horse practice. Mentoring is provided by eight full time veterinarians, including a board certified internal medicine specialist, and an on-call board certified surgeon. Emphasis is placed on developing diagnostic skills using physical examination and clinical laboratory testing while becoming proficient in the use of ancillary diagnostics, such as digital radiography and ultrasonography. The interns assume increasing case management, client communication and solo ambulatory responsibilities during the year. The internship at B.W. Furlong & Associates provides a well-rounded experience for individuals interested in pursing a career in private practice or a residency in internal medicine.
B.W. Furlong & Associates currently employs one intern, however we will be expanding our program to accommodate 2 interns for the 2007-2008 internship year. Interns will rotate between hospital and ambulatory responsibilities. The ambulatory intern will spend mornings performing in-patient lameness evaluations with Dr. Furlong. The remaining time will be spent with ambulatory clinicians and doing solo ambulatory calls. The hospital intern will manage out-patient internal medicine cases and hospitalized cases with Dr. Gardner. Interns participate in a rotating emergency coverage schedule.
Candidates interested in pursuing an internship at B.W. Furlong & Associates are strongly encouraged to visit the practice on an externship. Application requirements consist of graduation from veterinary school, a passing score on NAVLE or NBE and CCT and prerequisites necessary to obtain New Jersey licensure. Applications should include a letter of intent, curriculum vitae, transcript, three letters of recommendation, and current photograph.

Externships
B.W. Furlong & Associates offers externship opportunities to veterinary students from US and foreign veterinary schools. Externships are highly recommended to individuals considering an internship at our practice. Preference is given to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students. Effort is made for externs to assist and observe all veterinarians in the practice. Externs also spend time with the current interns to gain a good understanding of the internship program. Housing is available at the clinic for externs.
For further information, please see the AAEP Avenues website, www.aaep.org. Externship applications should include a resume and preferred externship dates. Information may be forwarded to Dr. McKinney at jmckinney@bwfurlongnj.com.
